Breast Reconstruction in Moncton, New Brunswick

What is Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

Breast reconstruction brings back women’s natural appearance after they lose one or both of their breasts as a result of cancer or other traumatic illnesses or events. For many women, this procedure can prove to be an extremely healing step in the recovery process. Dr. Jayson Dool performs breast reconstruction surgery in Moncton, New Brunswick, to re-create women's breasts in response to mastectomy, or breast removal, surgery.

Breast Reconstruction Benefits

The benefits of breast reconstruction can be both physical and psychological. Breast reconstruction restores both the size and overall appearance of the breasts. Many women who have undergone a mastectomy opt for this procedure in order to feel whole and healthy again. Breast reconstruction can achieve all these goals by:

  • Increasing breast size
  • Improving the breast's profile
  • Restoring the areola-nipple complex

How Does Breast Reconstruction Work?

In most cases, breast reconstruction includes some degree of breast augmentation with implants at our Moncton, New Brunswick, office. At your consultation, Dr. Dool will help you decide whether implants will best suit your goals for surgery. If so, he will help you choose the optimal implant size, shape, and material for your body type and medical needs.

Mastectomies generally result in a significant loss of fat, skin, and muscle in addition to glandular tissues in the breasts. Consequently, Dr. Dool will often perform tissue expansion techniques as a part of breast reconstruction procedures. Sometimes requiring a series of office visits, this method is known as a flap technique. It involves the placement of donor tissue from other areas of your body – often your abdomen or back. These donor tissues will help your body support the placement of the implants.

Prior to your reconstruction surgery, you will receive either IV sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Dool will then create the incisions necessary for placing the implants. For more information on the specifics of this portion of your procedure, please visit our breast augmentation page.

After placing your implants, Dr. Dool will close the incisions with sutures. Most patients can return home following their procedure.

Breast Reconstruction Recovery

Dr. Dool sends breast reconstruction patients home with a gauze wrap and, in most cases, a compression garment to aid with recovery. You may also receive drains to prevent fluid buildup. These will be removed during your follow-up appointment.

You will likely experience temporary swelling and bruising in the days after your surgery. Your final results will reveal themselves after a few weeks as the swelling goes down. You will also have scars from the incisions, which will also fade with time.

Breast reconstruction patients should avoid strenuous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks following their surgery.

Breast Reconstruction Safety & Risks

Like other surgical procedures, breast reconstruction comes with some possible risks, including bleeding, hematoma (blood accumulation beneath the skin), and infection. These symptoms are rare, however.

Breast augmentation can result in a condition known as capsular contracture – scar formation around the implant. Also rare, this condition may require a revision procedure.

Note that breast examinations are still possible after breast reconstruction surgery. In fact, it is especially important that breast reconstruction patients maintain their regular mammogram schedules. This is especially important for women who have had their breasts removed as a result of cancer.

Breast Reconstruction Fees

Breast reconstruction can range in cost from $5000 to $10000 or more, depending on the surgical techniques and anesthesia employed. Because of the reconstructive nature of this procedure, however, many patients can have their procedures covered by insurance.
